What are we learning?Ms. Morben will primarily be using a curriculum called First Steps in Music for Preschool and Beyond. First Steps is designed to prepare students to become musical in three ways:
Tuneful - to be able to have tunes in their heads and be able to sing those tunes accurately. Beatful - to feel the pulse in music. Artful - to be moved by music and recognize expressiveness in music. The Thirty Year Plan: Your child's experience in Kindergarten music is paramount to their future music-making. When these kids grow up, I want them to be able to sing "Happy Birthday" to their friends and family, sing a lullaby to their children, to rock on the beat while singing that lullaby, to dance at a wedding, to clap on the beat at a concert or sporting event, to seek out and share artful experiences with others in a concert hall, and to enjoy listening to music and being moved by music. |
A Typical Music Class:First Steps in Music is like a "musical workout". There are eight (8) different activities in each workout. Most music classes will include the following activities:
Pitch Exploration - I can explore my voice Song Fragments - I can echo parts of a song Simple Songs - I can remember a song to sing Arioso - I can choose a sound to share Movement Exploration - I can move my body to music Movement for Form and Expression - I can do motions for a song or chant Beat Motions - I can feel a steady beat Song Tales - I can listen and be a good audience member |
